Edinburgh residents are being warned about a new scam where cold-callers try to sell face masks, gloves and hand sanitiser over the phone.
Scottish Trading Standards said the caller gave misleading stats about COVID-19 deaths and claimed that 'normal masks' weren't as effective as the ones they were selling. Scottish consumers reported the nuisance and scam calls this week, saying they had been offered the PPE for £29.99 before the caller asked for their bank details.
Another similar scam has been reported where an automated message says that the wearing of face masks is now obligatory, in an attempt to encourage the consumer to purchase an overpriced mask.
