Amid a global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), some Derbyshire care workers are doing their rounds with plastic wallets strapped to their faces with string.

Melanie Ulyatt, managing director of Chesterfield-based care provider One to One Support Services, refuses to succumb to such desperate improvisations or to be “ripped off” by PPE suppliers who have said they can only deliver half her normal order.

“We need ten times that,” she said. “And these are not normal times.”

That’s why she and a team of volunteers have joined with two local businesses to produce thousands of face shields a day which they are issuing for free to care homes, domiciliary providers, GPs and nurses in the area.
